Camelina for our Dogs

Did you know…that Smart Earth Camelina Oil is excellent for your dog too?

We have been receiving a lot of questions from our customers asking if they can give our camelina oil to their dogs, well you sure can!

In fact, the majority of dogs are deficient in omega fatty acids and the addition of our oil will help to balance their overall diet. By adding camelina oil to your dog's diet, you can address many of the negative health problems associated with this deficiency.

Omega deficiency is often overlooked because it can look so different from dog to dog. Often it is mistaken for an allergy because some of the symptoms are quite similar. The variance of symptoms is due to inflammation being an opportunist – it will present itself wherever there is something already happening in the body. Some display in the skin and coat and some display in the joints…others may result in full blown disease (various types) if inflammation remains unchecked for a long period of time.

Another benefit of adding Camelina Oil is the balancing of omega 3 to 6. Not only will you be providing your dog with missing fatty acids they require in a healthy diet, you will also be providing the ideal ratio of these omega 3 to 6 (1.8:1). Other oils also have omegas in them, but they are not in the ideal ratio and they usually provide far too much omega 6 (which is inflammatory).

Additional concerns with other types of oils would be heavy metal contamination and sustainability (fish oils). Our camelina has naturally occurring vitamin E, making it the most stable omega oil when compared to fish or flax. These oils are very fragile and oxidize easily. If you inadvertently feed a rancid oil (oxidized), it causes more inflammation in the body.

The health community is now recommending the addition of vitamin E when feeding fish oil to your pet because the concern about rancid/oxidized oil is so great (vitamin E helps protect against the damage caused by rancid oils). The bonus about vitamin E in our oil is that It’s also a powerful antioxidant…so it’s like 2 for 1!

See below for some additional information on recommended feeding practices:

Measure for dogs – 5ml (1teaspoon) for each 25lb of body weight – divided into 2x/day if possible. This is to be given orally with or without food . We recommend that you start with a smaller amount and work up to your target measure. Too much oil too quickly can cause loosen stool.
